Zwolle is the capital city of the province of Overijssel and has a population of around 127.000 people, making it the second-largest municipality in the province after Enschede. It’s not surprising why so many people decide to relocate to Zwolle every year. Crown Relocations lists a few of their favorite reasons why many are considering a move to this amazing city.
History of Zwolle
Zwolle has been a recognized city since 1230; its wealth and prosperity come from its strategic location as a trading post and the diverse range of shops and services the city had.
One of the most impressive sites in the city is the Sassenpoort (Sassen gate); a gatehouse in the city wall of Zwolle. It was built in 1409, and it towers over the surrounding buildings, so it’s hard to miss!
If you want to experience one of the best views the city has to offer, we recommend that you visit and climb Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren. It is one of the most eye-catching monuments in the town and the third highest church tower in the Netherlands.
Shopping in Zwolle
If you’re looking for unique shops and products, you’re in luck! Zwolle boasts a number of beautiful stores featuring fashion, books, food, and unique homemade products that are hard to find anywhere else. It is impossible to get bored with the shops here!
In some of the shops, we recommend you visit our Waanders in the Broeren and the Foodboutique. Most of the shops in Zwolle are open all week, including on Sundays, so you will never miss out!
Possibly the best food in all of the Netherlands?!
Zwolle is well-known throughout the Netherlands as a culinary city, as De Librije is located in Zwolle; one of the best restaurants in the country (three Michelin stars!). However, if you’re looking to pay a bit less for your meal, we recommend that you visit the cozy restaurants that are situated throughout Zwolle, such as Pestengasthuys, where you can enjoy fantastic meals for a lower price.
Parks of Zwolle
Zwolle is one of the best cities for walking and cycling in all of the Netherlands; there are dozens of parks in and around the city. One of the biggest parks you can visit is Het Engelse Werk; created on former fortifications in the 19th century. The pond houses a bird sanctuary island full of magnificent birds for you to see. This is a great place for you to enjoy the day, going for a romantic walk perhaps?
If you are considering moving to the Netherlands, don’t forget about Zwolle! It has so much to offer, from rich and diverse culture to its people, buildings, and art.
