This is the s.h.o.c.k.i.n.g moment a dozy buffalo was t.o.s.s.e.d high into the air like a rag doll by a huge elephant.
The dopey buffalo had been snoozing under a tree in Masai Mara, Kenya – and in a bizarre occurrence for two animals that usually live peacefully side by side, as the elephant approached the tree the buffalo stood up and charged at her.
As the buffalo headbutted the enormous elephant, she retaliated and dug in her tusks – t.o.s.s.i.n.g the buffalo into the air with full force.
The extraordinary scene was captured by amateur photographer Kimberly Maurer, 56, who was on holiday at the game reserve.
The buffalo did not d.i.e immediately, but unsurprisingly didn’t survive the a.t.t.a.c.k – rangers at the reserve think the buffalo must have been unwell to act so out of character.
Kimberly said: “I started looking through the images on the back of my camera immediately after the a.t.t.a.c.k and became very excited to discover that I had actually captured the event in detail.
“This photograph was, no doubt, a once-in-a-lifetime capture for me.
“As you would imagine, his carcass was a meal for another animal or two.”
