Fall in Love All Over Again at Sweetheart Rock

When you talk romance, I can’t help but mention Puʻu Pehe, better known as Sweetheart Rock on the island of Lānaʻi. This is the perfect couple’s getaway complete with its own love story.

Sweetheart Rock is tucked away but within walking distance from one of the nicest resorts in the world, Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay. Book a plane ticket (or catch a ferry), reserve a room, and walk your date to the sea cliffs for one of Hawaiʻi’s most magnificent views.

The Legend of Sweetheart Rock

Legend has it that a young man from Maui fell in love with a young woman from Lānaʻi. As he went off to fish and gather supplies, she rested in a sea cave at the foot of Sweetheart Rock. When he returned, he found that the high tide had trapped her, and she had drowned in the cave.

In a rage, he climbed to the top of Puʻu Pehe Rock to bury her. The heiau, temple, can be clearly seen as you hike up the sea cliff.

The young man then jumped 80-feet to his death into the crashing surf below to be with her.

Although that may sound tragic, it’s a true Romeo and Juliet, a Hawaiian love story.
