Beauty and the beast! Adorable moment little girl kisses a sedated rhino better after it was ‘dehorned’ to prevent poachers k.i.l.l.i.n.g him

South Africa

This is the adorable moment a little girl kissed a rhino better after he was dehorned by conservation workers in South Africa to prevent poaching.

The white rhino, named Chuck, had his horn trimmed at the Kragga Kamma Game Park with a chainsaw.

Three-year-old Ava, whose father is a chainsaw operator, had gone along with him to the park – but became upset watching him trim Chuck’s horn.

Ayesha Cantor, 50, who runs the park, captured the touching moment little Ava kissed the sedated rhino.

‘Her reaction was totally spontaneous, we think she thought her father was harming the rhino as she was visibly distressed watching the dehorning and immediately went to ‘kiss it better’,’ she said.

Ava’s affection for the rhino was a surprise to the group, Ms. Cantor said.

‘It is going to be up to her generation to save the rhino, our generation has certainly not been successful in stemming the flow,’ she added.

Rhino horns can be sold on the black market for huge sums, used in Chinese medicine, or kept as trophies.

‘We trim our rhino’s horns every two years to lessens the risk of poaching and keeping the ‘reward’ to the poacher to a minimum,’ Ms. Cantor said.

She said the rhinos are injected with a cocktail of immobilizing drugs.

‘It takes up to about eight minutes for the full effect to take place,’ she said.

‘They can hear and feel everything. To keep stress to the rhino to a minimum, their ears are plugged and their eyes blindfolded.’
