Bad Goisern: A Peaceful Austrian Town

Before booking a 3-day hiking holiday through the Salzkammergut region in Austria, we had never even heard of the small town where we would be starting our adventure. Bad Goisern is a charming and peaceful Austrian town that deserves a visit as part of your visit to the Salzkammergut region.

Bad Goisern Austria

With a population of less than 8,000, this tiny market town is located about halfway between the more frequented towns of Bad Ischl and Hallstatt.

We only stayed in Bad Goisern for one night, as it was simply the starting point for our hiking holiday, though I’m not sure you’d need much more then a day to explore this sleepy town. There is plenty to do in the surrounding area, so again it’s a great place to stop while exploring the Salzkammergut region as a whole. We enjoyed walking around town admiring the church, cemetery, and charming houses.

The Traun River runs past the town…

… and there is a great wooded path that takes you right along the river, just behind the train station. A lovely spot for an evening stroll.

Restaurants in Bad Goisern

Though the restaurant choices were more reflective of an Italian village, we were happy with the selection. Any day with pizza and gelato is a good day in our book!

Many of the restaurants in Bad Goisern are located within the hotels and guesthouses and provide even more traditional Austrian fare.

Bad Goisern Hotel

We stayed at Hotel Goisererhof for our one-night visit to Bad Goisern and found the room adequate and the food appetizing.

Following a good night’s sleep, it was time for the adventure we had been waiting for! And boy, was it an adventure! Our first day consisted of a hike between Bad Goisern and Hallstatt. You should definitely read the detailed account of our trek through the Salzkammergut region in beautiful Austria. It was memorable to say the least.
